Gnathostomata / ˌneɪθɵstoʊmɑːtə / são os vertebrados da mandíbula. O termo deriva do grego γνάθος "maxilar" + στόμα "boca". A diversidade de Gnathostome compreende cerca de 60 000 espécies, que representam 99% de todos os vertebrados vivos. Além dos maxilares opostos, os gnathostomes vivos também têm dentes, apêndices emparelhados e um canal semicircular horizontal da orelha interna, juntamente com caracteres anatômicos fisiológicos e celulares, como as bainhas de mielina dos neurônios. Outro é um sistema imune adaptativo que usa recombinação de VJ para criar sites de reconhecimento de antígeno, em vez de usar recombinação genética no gene do receptor de linfócitos variável. Novos achados de fósseis sugerem os namorados como os parentes mais próximos do Gnathostomata. Acredita-se que os maxilares evoluíram a partir de arcos de apoio de brânquia anteriores que adquiriram um novo papel, sendo modificados para bombear água sobre as brânquias, abrindo e fechando a boca de forma mais eficaz - o mecanismo de bomba bucal. A boca poderia então crescer cada vez mais, tornando possível capturar presas maiores. Este mecanismo fechado e aberto, com o tempo, se tornaria mais forte e mais difícil, sendo transformado em maxilares reais.
