O gnosticismo descreve uma coleção de religiões antigas que ensinavam que as pessoas deveriam evitar o mundo material criado pelo demiurgo e abraçar o mundo espiritual. As idéias gnósticas influenciaram muitas religiões antigas que ensinam que a gnose pode ser alcançada através da prática da filantropia até o ponto de pobreza pessoal, abstinência sexual e diligentemente buscando sabedoria, ajudando os outros. No entanto, as práticas variaram entre aqueles que eram gnósticos.
