Giroscópio
Um giroscópio é um dispositivo para medir ou manter a orientação, com base nos princípios do momento angular. Os giroscópios mecânicos normalmente compreendem uma roda giratória ou disco em que o eixo é livre para assumir qualquer orientação. Embora esta orientação não permaneça fixa, ela muda em resposta a um torque externo muito menor e em uma direção diferente do que seria com o grande momento angular associado à alta taxa de rotação e momento de inércia do disco. A orientação do dispositivo permanece quase fixada, independentemente do movimento da plataforma de montagem, porque a montagem do dispositivo em um cardan minimiza o torque externo. Também existem giroscópios baseados em outros princípios operacionais, como os dispositivos de giroscópio MEMS eletrônicos e com microchip em dispositivos eletrônicos de consumo, lasers de anel de estado sólido, giroscópios de fibra óptica e o giroscópio quântico extremamente sensível. As aplicações dos giroscópios incluem sistemas de navegação inercial em que as bússolas magnéticas não funcionariam ou não seriam precisas, ou para a estabilização de veículos voadores, como helicópteros controlados por rádio ou veículos aéreos não tripulados.
