As febres hemorrágicas virais são um grupo diverso de doenças animais e humanas que podem ser causadas por cinco famílias distintas de vírus de RNA: as famílias Arenaviridae, Filoviridae, Bunyaviridae, Flaviviridae e Rhabdoviridae. Todos os tipos de VHF são caracterizados por febre e distúrbios hemorrágicos e todos podem progredir para febre alta, choque e morte em muitos casos. Alguns dos agentes de VHF causam doenças relativamente moderadas, como a epidemia de nefropata escandinava, enquanto outras, como o vírus Ebola africano, podem causar doenças graves e fatais.
