Hekla
Hekla (pronúncia islandesa: (escute)), ou Hecla, é um estratovolcão no sul da Islândia, com uma altura de 1.491 metros (4.892 pés). Hekla é um dos vulcões mais ativos da Islândia; Mais de 20 erupções ocorreram em e ao redor do vulcão desde 874. Durante a Idade Média, os europeus chamaram o vulcão de "Gateway to Hell". Hekla é parte de uma crista vulcânica, 40 quilômetros (25 mi) de comprimento. A parte mais ativa desta crista, uma fissura de cerca de 5,5 km (3,4 mi) de comprimento chamada Heklugjá, é considerada o vulcão Hekla propriamente dito. Hekla parece um barco derrubado, com sua quilha sendo uma série de crateras, duas das quais geralmente são as mais ativas. As erupções freqüentes e frequentes do vulcão cobriram grande parte da Islândia com o Tephra e essas camadas podem ser usadas até a data das erupções de outros vulcões da Islândia. 10% do tephra criado na Islândia nos últimos mil anos veio da Hekla, no valor de 5 km3. O vulcão produziu um dos maiores volumes de lava de qualquer um no mundo no último milênio, cerca de 8 km3.
