Hipérbole
Em matemática, uma hipérbole é um tipo de curva suave, deitada em um plano, definida por suas propriedades geométricas ou por equações para as quais é o conjunto de soluções. Uma hipérbole tem duas peças, chamadas de componentes ou ramos conectados, que são imagens espelhadas umas das outras e parecem duas curvas infinitas. A hipérbole é um dos quatro tipos de seção cônica, formada pela interseção de um plano e um cone duplo. Se o plano cruza as duas metades do cone duplo, mas não passa pelo ápice dos cones, então a cônica é uma hipérbole. As hiperbases surgem de muitas maneiras: como a curva que representa a função no plano cartesiano, como a aparência de um círculo visto dentro dele, como o caminho seguido pela sombra da ponta de um relógio de sol, como a forma de uma órbita aberta, como a órbita de uma nave espacial durante um balanço assistido pela gravidade de um planeta ou, mais geralmente, qualquer nave espacial que exceda a velocidade de escape do planeta mais próximo, como o caminho de um cometa de aparição única, como a trajetória de dispersão de uma partícula subatômica, e assim por diante. Cada ramo da hipérbole tem dois braços que ficam mais retos para fora do centro da hipérbole.
