Uma plataforma de gelo é uma plataforma de gelo flutuante espessa que forma onde uma geleira ou uma camada de gelo flui para um litoral e para a superfície do oceano. As prateleiras de gelo só são encontradas na Antártica, na Gronelândia e no Canadá. O limite entre a plataforma de gelo flutuante e o gelo aterrado que o alimenta é chamado de linha de aterramento. A espessura das prateleiras de gelo varia de cerca de 100 a 1000 metros. Em contraste, o gelo marinho é formado na água, é muito mais fino e se forma em todo o oceano Ártico. Também é encontrado no Oceano Austral ao redor do continente da Antártida. As prateleiras de gelo são principalmente impulsionadas pela pressão gravitacional do gelo aterrado.
