Um incunable, ou às vezes incunípulo, é um livro, um panfleto ou um lado que foi impresso - não manuscrito - antes do ano 1501 na Europa. "Incontável" é a forma singular anglicizada de "incunabula", o latim para "swaddling clothes" ou "berço", que pode se referir a "os primeiros estágios ou primeiros vestígios no desenvolvimento de qualquer coisa". Um termo anterior para "incunable" é "fifteener", referindo-se ao século 15. O primeiro uso registrado de incunabula como termo de impressão é um folheto latino de Bernhard von Mallinckrodt, De ortu et progressu artis typographicae, que inclui a frase prima typographicae incunabula, "a primeira infância da impressão", termo ao qual ele arbitrariamente estabeleceu um final, 1500, que ainda representa uma convenção. O termo chegou a denotar os próprios livros impressos no final do século XVII. John Evelyn, ao mover os Manuscritos da Arundel para a Royal Society em agosto de 1678, observou os livros impressos entre os manuscritos: "Os livros impressos, sendo as impressões mais antigas, não são menos valiosos, considero-os quase iguais aos MSS.
