Um número inteiro é um número que é escrito sem um componente fracionário. Por exemplo, 21, 4 e -2048 são números inteiros; 9.75, 5½ e √2 não são inteiros. O conjunto de números inteiros consiste em números naturais, zero e opostos dos números naturais. O nome deriva do inteiro latino. O conjunto de todos os números inteiros é frequentemente denotado por uma negrito Z, que significa Zahlen; é um subconjunto dos conjuntos de números racionais e reais. Os inteiros formam o grupo mais pequeno que contém o monóide aditivo dos números naturais. Como os números naturais, os inteiros formam um conjunto contábil infinito. Na teoria do número algébrico, esses inteiros comumente entendidos, incorporados no campo de números racionais, são referidos como inteiros racionais para distingui-los dos inteiros algébricos mais amplamente definidos.
