Phytelephas aequatorialis
A palmeira Phytelephas aequatorialis, vulgarmente conhecida como Palma de Marfim equatoriana, é a principal fonte de marfim vegetal e equatoriano ou tagua, uma alternativa botânica ao marfim. Esta palmeira é encontrada nas florestas tropicais do Equador. Possui um tronco arborizado que pode atingir 20 m de altura e folhas de pinhão muito longas. As plantas são dióxicas, com as fêmeas com grandes frutos cônicos marrons, cada uma aproximadamente do tamanho de uma toranja e cobertas com uma casca com chifre, contendo geralmente quatro sementes. As sementes imaturas contêm polpa doce e comestível. As sementes maduras são mais difíceis do que a madeira e estão envoltos em uma concha de bonel. O endosperma é um material hemicelulose branco que é tão difícil que pode ser polido e esculpido como marfim. Outras três espécies neste gênero também são fontes de marfim vegetal. As sementes imatíveis comestíveis são muitas vezes dispersas por roedores de floresta tropical, como agoutis. Em algumas áreas rurais, as árvores são usadas para atrair roedores, que são capturados pela carne. As palmeiras são ocasionalmente cultivadas como uma cultura comercial.
