O Corpus Juris Civilis é o nome moderno para uma coleção de obras fundamentais em jurisprudência, emitido de 529 a 534 por ordem de Justiniano I, imperador romano oriental. Também às vezes é referido como o Código de Justiniano, embora este nome seja mais apropriado para a parte intitulada Codex Justinianus. O trabalho como planejado tinha três partes: o Código é uma compilação, por seleção e extração, de leis imperiais até o momento; O Digest ou Pandects é uma enciclopédia composta principalmente de extratos breves dos escritos de juristas romanos; e os Institutos são um livro didático do aluno, principalmente introduzindo o Código, embora tenha importantes elementos conceituais menos desenvolvidos no Código ou no Digest. Todas as três partes, até mesmo o livro didático, receberam força da lei. Pretendiam-se, em conjunto, ser a única fonte de lei; A referência a qualquer outra fonte, incluindo os textos originais a partir da qual o Código e o Digest foram feitos, foi proibida.
