Um sistema baseado em conhecimento é um programa de computador que justifica e usa uma base de conhecimento para resolver problemas complexos. O termo é amplo e é usado para se referir a diferentes tipos de sistemas. O único tema comum que une todos os sistemas baseados no conhecimento é uma tentativa de representar o conhecimento explicitamente através de ferramentas como ontologias e regras, em vez de implícita, por meio do código da forma como um programa de computador convencional faz. Um sistema baseado no conhecimento tem pelo menos um e geralmente dois tipos de sub-sistemas: uma base de conhecimento e um mecanismo de inferência. A base de conhecimento representa fatos sobre o mundo, muitas vezes em alguma forma de ontologia de subsunção. O mecanismo de inferência representa asserções e condições lógicas sobre o mundo, geralmente representadas através das regras IF-THEN. Os sistemas baseados no conhecimento foram desenvolvidos pela primeira vez por pesquisadores da Inteligência Artificial. Estes primeiros sistemas baseados no conhecimento eram principalmente sistemas experientes. Na verdade, o termo é freqüentemente usado de forma sinônima com sistemas especializados. A diferença está na visão tomada para descrever o sistema. O sistema especialista refere-se ao tipo de tarefa que o sistema está tentando resolver, para substituir ou auxiliar um especialista humano em uma tarefa complexa.

A Knowledge-based system is a computer program that reasons and uses a knowledge base to solve complex problems. The term is broad and is used to refer to many different kinds of systems. The one common theme that unites all knowledge based systems is an attempt to represent knowledge explicitly via tools such as ontologies and rules rather than implicitly via code the way a conventional computer program does. A knowledge based system has at least one and usually two types of sub-systems: a knowledge base and an inference engine. The knowledge base represents facts about the world, often in some form of subsumption ontology. The inference engine represents logical assertions and conditions about the world, usually represented via IF-THEN rules. Knowledge-Based systems were first developed by Artificial Intelligence researchers. These early knowledge-based systems were primarily expert systems. In fact the term is often used synonymously with expert systems. The difference is in the view taken to describe the system. Expert system refers to the type of task the system is trying to solve, to replace or aid a human expert in a complex task.
