A lagniappe é um pequeno presente dado a um cliente por um comerciante no momento de uma compra, ou mais amplamente, "algo dado ou obtido gratuitamente ou por meio de boa medida". A palavra entrou em inglês do francês da Louisiana adaptando uma palavra quechua trazida para Nova Orleans pelos crioulos espanhóis. Ele derivou da frase espanhola da América do Sul la yapa. O termo foi rastreado até a palavra quechua yapay. Nos mercados andinos ainda é costume pedir um yapa ao fazer uma compra. O vendedor geralmente responde jogando um pouco mais. Embora este seja um costume antigo, ainda é amplamente praticado hoje na Louisiana. Os vendedores de rua, especialmente os vendedores de vegetais, devem lançar alguns pimentos verdes ou um pequeno grupo de coentro com uma compra.
