Limerence é um estado de espírito involuntário que resulta de uma atração romântica para outra pessoa combinada com uma necessidade obscena e obsessiva de ter os sentimentos de alguém reciprocados. A psicóloga Dorothy Tennov cunhou o termo "limerência" em seu livro de 1979, Love and Limerence: A experiência de estar apaixonado por descrever o conceito que surgiu de seu trabalho em meados da década de 1960, quando entrevistou mais de 500 pessoas sobre o tema do amor. Mais recentemente, a limerência foi definida em relação ao transtorno obsessivo compulsivo como "um estado interpessoal involuntário que envolve pensamentos, sentimentos e comportamentos intrusivos, obsessivos e compulsivos que dependem da reciprocação emocional percebida do objeto de interesse". A limerência também foi definida em termos dos efeitos potencialmente inspiradores e da relação com a teoria do apego, que não é exclusivamente sexual, como sendo "um estado involuntário potencialmente inspirador de adoração e apego a um objeto limerente envolvendo pensamentos, sentimentos e comportamentos intrusivos e obsessivos da euforia ao desespero, dependente da reciprocidade emocional percebida ".
