Melanismo
O melanismo é um desenvolvimento da pigmentação de pigmento escuro da melanina na pele ou seus apêndices e é o oposto do albinismo. Historicamente, também era o termo médico para icterícia negra. A palavra melanismo é deduzida do grego: μελανός, que significa "pigmento preto". O pseudo-melanismo, também chamado de abundância, é outra variante de pigmentação, caracterizada por manchas escuras ou listras alargadas, que cobrem uma grande parte do corpo do animal, tornando-se melanístico. Uma deficiência ou ausência total de pigmentos de melanina é chamada de amelanismo. A deposição mórbida de matéria negra, muitas vezes de caráter maligno que causa tumores pigmentados, é chamada de melanose.
