Meristem
Um meristema é o tecido na maioria das plantas que contém células indiferenciadas, encontradas em zonas da planta onde o crescimento pode ocorrer. As células meristemáticas dão origem a vários órgãos da planta e mantêm a planta crescendo. O meristema apical do tiro dá origem a órgãos como folhas e flores, enquanto o meristema apical da raiz fornece as células meristemáticas para o futuro crescimento da raiz. As células SAM e RAM se dividem rapidamente e são consideradas indeterminadas, na medida em que não possuem nenhum status final definido. Nesse sentido, as células meristemáticas são freqüentemente comparadas às células-tronco em animais, que têm um comportamento e uma função análogos. O termo meristema foi usado pela primeira vez em 1858 por Karl Wilhelm von Nägeli em seu livro Beiträge zur Wissenschaftlichen Botanik. É derivado da palavra grega merizein, que significa dividir, em reconhecimento de sua função inerente. Em geral, células de plantas diferenciadas não podem dividir ou produzir células de um tipo diferente.
