A National Gallery é um museu de arte na Trafalgar Square, em Londres. Fundada em 1824, abriga uma coleção de mais de 2.300 pinturas datadas de meados do século 13 até 1900. A Galeria é uma instituição de caridade isenta e um órgão público não departamental do Departamento de Cultura, Mídia e Esporte. A sua coleção pertence ao público do Reino Unido e a entrada na coleção principal é gratuita. É o quinto museu de arte mais visitado do mundo, depois do Museu do Louvre, do Museu Metropolitano de Arte, do Museu Britânico e da Tate Modern. Ao contrário dos museus comparáveis na Europa continental, a Galeria Nacional não foi formada pela nacionalização de uma coleção de arte real ou principesca. Ocorreu quando o governo britânico comprou 38 pinturas dos herdeiros de John Julius Angerstein, um corretor de seguros e patrono das artes, em 1824. Após essa compra inicial, a Galeria foi formada principalmente por seus primeiros diretores, nomeadamente Sir Charles Lock Eastlake , e por doações privadas, que compõem dois terços da coleção.
