Nauru, oficialmente a República de Nauru e anteriormente conhecida como Ilha Agradável, é um país insular na Micronésia no Pacífico Sul. O vizinho mais próximo é a ilha de Banaba, em Kiribati, a 300 quilômetros a leste. Com 9.378 habitantes em uma área de 21 quilômetros quadrados, Nauru é o estado mais pequeno no Pacífico Sul e segundo menor estado por população do mundo, atrás da Cidade do Vaticano. Instalado por micronésios e polinésios, Nauru foi anexado e reivindicado como uma colônia pelo Império alemão no final do século 19. Após a Primeira Guerra Mundial, Nauru tornou-se um mandato da Liga das Nações administrado pela Austrália, Nova Zelândia e Reino Unido. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Nauru foi ocupado por tropas japonesas, que foram ignoradas pelo avanço dos Aliados no Pacífico. Depois que a guerra terminou, o país entrou em trusteeship novamente. Nauru ganhou sua independência em 1968. Nauru é uma ilha de rock fosfato com depósitos ricos perto da superfície, o que permite operações fáceis de remoção de tiragens.
