O número de massa, também chamado número de massa atômica ou número de nucleômetro, é o número total de prótons e nêutrons em um núcleo atômico. Como os prótons e os nêutrons são ambos os bônons, o número da massa A é idêntico ao Baryon, número B, tanto do núcleo quanto do átomo ou íon inteiro. O número de massa é diferente para cada isótopo diferente de um elemento químico. Isso não é o mesmo que o número atômico que denota o número de prótons em um núcleo, e assim identifica de forma exclusiva um elemento. Portanto, a diferença entre o número de massa e o número atômico dá o número de neutrons em um dado núcleo: N = A-Z. O número de massa é escrito após o nome do elemento ou como um sobrescrito à esquerda do símbolo de um elemento. Por exemplo, o isótopo mais comum de carbono é carbono 12 ou 12C, que tem 6 prótons e 6 nêutrons. O símbolo isotópico completo também teria o número atômico como um subíndice à esquerda do símbolo do elemento diretamente abaixo do número de massa: 12 6C. The mass number, also called atomic mass number or nucleon number, is the total number of protons and neutrons in an atomic nucleus. Because protons and neutrons both are baryons, the mass number A is identical with the baryon number B as of the nucleus as of the whole atom or ion. The mass number is different for each different isotope of a chemical element. This is not the same as the atomic number which denotes the number of protons in a nucleus, and thus uniquely identifies an element. Hence, the difference between the mass number and the atomic number gives the number of neutrons in a given nucleus: N=A−Z. The mass number is written either after the element name or as a superscript to the left of an element's symbol. For example, the most common isotope of carbon is carbon-12, or 12C, which has 6 protons and 6 neutrons. The full isotope symbol would also have the atomic number as a subscript to the left of the element symbol directly below the mass number: 12 6C. This is technically redundant, as each element is defined by its atomic number, so it is often omitted.
