Ocidentalismo
O termo "Occidentalismo" (árabe: الاستغراب) é usado para se referir a imagens de "O Ocidente" de uma das duas formas principais: a) pontos de vista estereotipados e às vezes desumanizantes sobre o mundo ocidental, incluindo a Europa e o mundo de língua inglesa; e b), ideologias ou visões do Ocidente desenvolvidas no Ocidente ou no Oeste. A definição anterior enfatiza as construções negativas do Ocidente e muitas vezes se concentra no mundo islâmico. A última abordagem tem um alcance mais amplo e inclui representações tanto positivas como negativas. O termo foi usado no último sentido por James G. Carrier em seu livro Occidentalismo: Imagens do Oeste (1995), e posteriormente por Ian Buruma e Avishai Margalit em seu livro Ocidentalismo: o Ocidente dos Olhos dos Inimigos (2004) . O termo é uma inversão do orientalismo, o rótulo de Edward Said para as visões ocidentais estereotipadas do Oriente. Vários livros anteriores também usaram o termo, às vezes com significados diferentes, como o Ocidente do Chen Xiaomei: uma teoria do contra-discurso na China pós-Mao (Nova York: Oxford, 1995).
