É uma farsa na qual Marplot interfere nos assuntos românticos de seus amigos e, apesar de ser bem-intencionado, frustra-os. A caracterização de Marplot como um corpo ocupado cujo "prazer principal é conhecer o negócio de todos" foi tão popular que eles apareceram como personagem principal em uma sequela, Marplot. O nome é um jogo de palavras-passe / trama - e passou para o idioma como um eponym ou personificação deste tipo.
