Omã, oficialmente chamado de Sultanato de Omã, é um estado árabe no sudoeste da Ásia, na costa sudeste da Península Arábica. Tem uma posição estrategicamente importante na foz do Golfo Pérsico. Limita os Emirados Árabes Unidos ao noroeste, a Arábia Saudita ao oeste e o Iêmen ao sudoeste e também compartilha fronteiras marítimas com o Irã e o Paquistão. A costa é formada pelo mar da Arábia no sudeste e no Golfo de Omã, no nordeste. As escândalos de Madha e Musandam são cercados pelos Emirados Árabes Unidos nas fronteiras terrestres, com o Estreito de Ormuz e o Golfo de Oman formando os limites costeiros de Musandam. A partir do século 17, Omã tinha seu próprio império e competia com Portugal e Grã-Bretanha para influenciar o Golfo Pérsico e o Oceano Índico. No seu auge no século XIX, a influência ou o controle de Omã se estendeu através do Estreito de Ormuz ao Irã, e o Paquistão moderno, e no extremo sul de Zanzibar. À medida que seu poder declinou no século 20, o sultanato sofreu uma forte influência do Reino Unido, embora Omã nunca tenha sido formalmente parte do Império Britânico ou um protetorado britânico.
