Pentarquia
A "Pentarquia" é um termo na história do cristianismo para a idéia do domínio universal sobre toda a cristandade pelos chefes das cinco maiores vistas episcopais do Império Romano: Roma, Constantinopla, Alexandria, Antioquia e Jerusalém. A idéia surgiu devido à proeminência política e eclesiástica dessas cinco visões, mas o conceito de sua autoridade universal e exclusiva estava firmemente vinculado à estrutura administrativa do Império Romano. A ideia da pentarquia foi primeiro expressa tangivelmente nas leis do Imperador Justiniano I, particularmente na Novella 131. O Conselho Quinisext de 692 deu-lhe reconhecimento formal e classificou as vírgulas em ordem de preeminência. Sobretudo após Quinisext, a pentarquia foi pelo menos aceita filosoficamente no cristianismo oriental, mas geralmente não no Ocidente, que rejeitou o Conselho. A maior autoridade destes vê em relação aos outros estava ligada à sua proeminência política e eclesiástica; Todos estavam localizados em importantes cidades e regiões do Império Romano e eram importantes centros da Igreja Cristã.
