A via de fosfato de pentose é uma via bioquímica paralela à glicólise que gera NADPH e pentoses. Embora implique a oxidação da glicose, seu papel primário é anabólico e não catabólico. Existem duas fases distintas na via. A primeira é a fase oxidativa, na qual o NADPH é gerado e o segundo é a síntese não oxidante de açúcares 5-carbono. Para a maioria dos organismos, a via da fosfato de pentose ocorre no citosol; Nas plantas, a maioria das etapas ocorrem nos plastidios. Semelhante à glicólise, a via da fosfato de pentose parece ter uma origem evolutiva muito antiga. As reações desta via são catalisadas por enzimas em células modernas. Eles também ocorrem, no entanto, não enzimaticamente em condições que replicam os do oceano Arqueano, e são então catalisados por íons metálicos, ferro ferroso Fe, em particular.
