Fobia
Uma fobia é, quando usada no contexto da psicologia clínica, um tipo de transtorno de ansiedade, geralmente definido como um medo persistente de um objeto ou situação em que o sofredor comete grandes comprimentos para evitar, tipicamente desproporcional ao perigo real representado, muitas vezes sendo reconhecido como irracional. Caso a fobia não possa ser evitada inteiramente, o sofredor suportará a situação ou o objeto com sofrimento marcado e interferência significativa nas atividades sociais ou ocupacionais. Os termos angústia e comprometimento, conforme definido pelo Manual de Diagnóstico e Estatística de Distúrbios Mentais, Quarta Edição também devem levar em consideração o contexto do ambiente do paciente se tentar um diagnóstico. O DSM-IV-TR afirma que, se um estímulo fóbico, seja um objeto ou uma situação social, está ausente inteiramente em um ambiente - um diagnóstico não pode ser feito. Um exemplo dessa situação seria um indivíduo que tem medo de camundongos, mas vive em uma área desprovida de camundongos.
