Fosfolípido
Os fosfolípidos são uma classe de lipídios que são um dos principais componentes de todas as membranas celulares, pois podem formar bicamadas lipídicas. A maioria dos fosfolípidos contém um diglicérido, um grupo fosfato e uma molécula orgânica simples, como a colina; uma exceção a esta regra é esfingomielina, que é derivada de esfingosina em vez de glicerol. O primeiro fosfolípido identificado como tal nos tecidos biológicos foi a lecitina, ou fosfatidilcolina, na gema do ovo, de Theodore Nicolas Gobley, um químico e farmacêutico francês, em 1847. A estrutura da molécula de fosfolípidos geralmente consiste em caudas hidrofóbicas e uma cabeça hidrofílica. As membranas biológicas em eucariotas também contêm outra classe de lipídios, esteróis, intercalados entre os fosfolipídios e juntos proporcionam fluidez e resistência mecânica da membrana. Os fosfolípidos purificados são produzidos comercialmente e encontraram aplicações na nanotecnologia e na ciência dos materiais.
