A fotogrametria é um método científico estimativo que visa recuperar as posições exatas e as vias de movimento dos pontos de referência designados localizados em qualquer objeto em movimento, nos seus componentes e no ambiente imediatamente adjacente. A fotogrametria emprega imagens de alta velocidade e os métodos precisos de sensoriamento remoto para detectar, medir e gravar campos de movimento complexos 2-D e 3-D. A fotogrametria alimenta as medidas de detecção remota e os resultados da análise de imagens em modelos computacionais na tentativa de estimar sucessivamente, com precisão crescente, os movimentos relativos reais, 3-D no campo pesquisado. Suas aplicações incluem o rastreamento por satélite das alterações de posicionamento relativo em todos os ambientes da Terra, a pesquisa sobre natação de peixes, vôo de pássaros ou insetos, outros processos de movimento relativo.
