A fotossíntese é um processo usado por plantas e outros organismos para converter a energia da luz, normalmente do sol, em energia química que pode ser posteriormente liberada para alimentar as atividades dos organismos. Esta energia química é armazenada em moléculas de carboidratos, como açúcares, que são sintetizados a partir de dióxido de carbono e água - daí o nome da fotossíntese, do grego φῶς, phōs, "light" e σύνθεσις, síntese, "juntar". Na maioria dos casos, o oxigênio também é liberado como um produto de lixo. A maioria das plantas, a maioria das algas e cianobactérias realizam a fotossíntese, e esses organismos são chamados de fotoautotróficos. A fotossíntese mantém níveis de oxigênio atmosférico e fornece todos os compostos orgânicos e a maior parte da energia necessária para a vida na Terra. Embora a fotossíntese seja realizada de forma diferente por diferentes espécies, o processo sempre começa quando a energia da luz é absorvida por proteínas chamadas centros de reação que contêm pigmentos de clorofila verdes. Nas plantas, essas proteínas são mantidas dentro de organelas denominadas cloroplastos, que são mais abundantes em células foliares, enquanto que em bactérias estão inseridas na membrana plasmática.
