Um pigmento é um material que altera a cor da luz refletida ou transmitida como resultado da absorção seletiva do comprimento de onda. Este processo físico difere da fluorescência, fosforescência e outras formas de luminescência, em que um material emite luz. Muitos materiais absorvem seletivamente certos comprimentos de onda da luz. Os materiais que os seres humanos escolheram e desenvolveram para usar como pigmentos geralmente possuem propriedades especiais que os tornam ideais para colorir outros materiais. Um pigmento deve ter uma forte resistência à coloração em relação aos materiais que ele colora. Deve ser estável na forma sólida à temperatura ambiente. Para aplicações industriais, bem como nas artes, permanência e estabilidade são propriedades desejáveis. Os pigmentos que não são permanentes são chamados de fugitivos. Os pigmentos fugitivos desaparecem ao longo do tempo, ou com a exposição à luz, enquanto alguns acabam por enxertar. Os pigmentos são usados para colorir tinta, tinta, plástico, tecido, cosméticos, alimentos e outros materiais. A maioria dos pigmentos utilizados na fabricação e as artes visuais são corantes secos, geralmente moídos em pó fino.
