Polygonaceae
As Polygonaceae são uma família de plantas com flores conhecidas informalmente como a família knotweed ou a família smartweed-buckwheat nos Estados Unidos. O nome é baseado no gênero Polygonum, e foi usado pela primeira vez por Antoine Laurent de Jussieu em 1789 em seu livro, Genera Plantarum. O nome refere-se aos muitos nós inchados que as hastes de algumas espécies têm. É derivado do grego; poli significa muitos e goni significa joelho ou articulação. As Polygonaceae compreendem cerca de 1200 espécies distribuídas em cerca de 50 gêneros. Os maiores gêneros são Eriogonum (240 espécies), Rumex (200 espécies), Coccoloba (120 espécies), Persicaria (100 espécies) e Calligonum (80 espécies). A família está presente em todo o mundo, mas é mais diversificada na Zona Norte Temperada. Várias espécies são cultivadas como plantas ornamentais. Algumas espécies de Triplaris fornecem madeira serrada. O fruto da uva do mar (Coccoloba uvifera) é comido e, na Flórida, a geléia é feita a partir dela e comercializada. As sementes de duas espécies de Fagopyrum, conhecidas como trigo sarraceno (sarrasina em francês), fornecem grãos (sua farinha escura é conhecida como blé noir (trigo preto) na França).
