Um postil ou postilla era originalmente um termo para comentários bíblicos. Ele é derivado do latino "post illa verba textus", referindo-se a leituras bíblicas. A palavra ocorre pela primeira vez na crónica de Nicolas Trivetus, mas mais tarde significou apenas uma exposição homilética, e assim se tornou sinônimo de homilia em distinção do sermão temático. Finalmente, após o meio do século XIV, foi aplicado a um ciclo anual de homilias.

A postil or postilla was originally a term for Bible commentaries. It is derived from the Latin "post illa verba textus", referring to Biblical readings. The word first occurs in the chronicle of Nicolas Trivetus, but later it came to mean only homiletic exposition, and thus became synonymous with homily in distinction from the thematic sermon. Finally, after the middle of the fourteenth century, it was applied to an annual cycle of homilies.
