Presbítero no Novo Testamento refere-se a um líder em congregações cristãs locais, e muitas vezes não se distinguem claramente de episkopos, presbítero referente a anciãos comuns e episkopos que se referem exclusivamente ao cargo de bispo. No uso moderno, é assim distinto do bispo e sinônimo de sacerdote. No uso do protestante principal, o termo não é visto como se referindo a um membro do sacerdócio e termos como o ministro, pastor e ancião são usados.
