O Catar, oficialmente o Estado do Catar, é um país árabe soberano, localizado na Ásia Ocidental, ocupando a pequena península de Qatar na costa nordeste da península árabe muito maior. A sua única fronteira terrestre é a Arábia Saudita ao sul, com o resto do seu território cercado pelo Golfo Pérsico. Um estreito no Golfo separa o Catar do reino da ilha vizinha de Bahrein. Antes da descoberta do petróleo, o Catar foi notado principalmente pela caça à pérola. Após o governo otomano, tornou-se um protectorado britânico no início do século 20 até ganhar a independência em 1971. O Qatar foi governado pela família Al Thani desde meados do século XIX. Em 1995, o xeque Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani tornou-se Emir quando depoiu seu pai, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, em um golpe de estado pacífico, apenas para depois demitir-se em favor de seu filho, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, em junho 2013. O semi-eleito Majlis al Shura do Qatar tem autoridade legislativa muito limitada para elaborar e aprovar leis. Qatar tem a sociedade mais conservadora no GCC após a Arábia Saudita. A maioria dos Qataris pertence à rígida seita wahhabi do Islã.

Qatar, officially the State of Qatar, is a sovereign Arab country, located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the much larger Arabian Peninsula. Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. A strait in the Gulf separates Qatar from the nearby island kingdom of Bahrain. Before the discovery of oil, Qatar was noted mainly for pearl hunting. Following Ottoman rule it became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. Qatar has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-19th century. In 1995, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani became Emir when he deposed his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, in a peaceful coup d'état, only to later step down in favour of his son, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on June 2013. Qatar's semi-elected Majlis al Shura has very limited legislative authority to draft and approve laws. Qatar has the most conservative society in the GCC after Saudi Arabia. Most Qataris belong to the strict Wahhabi sect of Islam.
