QwaQwa
QwaQwa era um bantustão na parte central da África do Sul. Abrangeu uma região muito pequena de 655 quilômetros quadrados no leste da antiga província sul-africana de Orange Free State, que faz fronteira com Lesotho. Sua capital era Phuthaditjhaba. Era a pátria designada de mais de 180.000 pessoas Basotho com fala de Sesotho. A neve freqüente nos picos das montanhas de Drakensberg levou o San a chamar a região "Qwa-Qwa". Nos afrikaans era conhecido como "Witsieshoek", depois do nome de uma fazenda. Duas tribos viviam na região, Bakoena e Batlokoa. Em 1969, eles foram unidos e a área foi nomeada "KwaKwa". No mesmo ano, o nome foi alterado para "QwaQwa" para evitar uma identificação étnica. Em 1 de novembro de 1974, QwaQwa foi concedido "autogoverno", com Kenneth Mopeli como Ministro-Chefe. Mopeli serviria como ministro-chefe em toda a existência de QwaQwa. Após 27 de abril de 1994, QwaQwa foi dissolvido, seguindo as primeiras eleições democráticas sul-africanas e reunidas com a África do Sul, juntamente com as nove outras patamares. É agora parte da província do Estado Livre, com Phuthaditjhaba servindo de sede do município local de Maluti a Phofung.
