O pinheiro vermelho é uma árvore de coníferas de folhas perenes caracterizada por crescimento alto e reto em uma variedade de habitats. Geralmente varia entre 20-35 m de altura e 1 m no diâmetro do tronco, atingindo excepcionalmente 43 m de altura. A coroa é cônica, tornando-se uma estreita cúpula arredondada com a idade. A casca é grossa e cinza-marrom na base da árvore, mas fina, escamosa e laranja-vermelha brilhante na coroa superior; O nome da árvore deriva desse caráter distintivo. Algumas cores vermelhas podem ser vistas nas fissuras da casca. O pinheiro vermelho é auto-poda; não há ramos mortos nas árvores, e as árvores mais antigas podem ter comprimentos muito longos de tronco sem ramificações abaixo do dossel. As folhas são em forma de agulha, verde escuro, em fascículos de dois, 12-18 cm de comprimento e quebradiço.
