Nódulo de raiz
Os nódulos de raízes ocorrem nas raízes das plantas que se associam a bactérias simbióticas que fixam nitrogênio. Sob condições de limitação de nitrogênio, plantas capazes formam uma relação simbiótica com uma estirpe de bactéria conhecida como rizobia por hospedeiro. Este processo evoluiu várias vezes dentro das Fabaceae, bem como em outras espécies encontradas dentro do clade Rosid. Dentro dos nódulos de leguminosas, o gás nitrogênio da atmosfera é convertido em amônia, que é então assimilado em aminoácidos, nucleotídeos e outros constituintes celulares, como vitaminas, flavonas e hormônios. A sua capacidade de reparar o nitrogênio gasoso faz com que as leguminosas sejam um organismo agrícola ideal, pois sua exigência de fertilizante nitrogenado é reduzida. De fato, o alto teor de nitrogênio bloqueia o desenvolvimento do nódulo, pois não há benefício para a planta de formar a simbiose. A energia para dividir o gás nitrogênio no nódulo provém de açúcar que é transladado da folha. O malato como produto de degradação da sacarose é a fonte direta de carbono para o bacteróide. A fixação de nitrogênio no nódulo é muito sensível ao oxigênio.
