A ciência é uma empresa sistemática que constrói e organiza conhecimento sob a forma de explicações e previsões testáveis sobre o universo. Em um significado mais antigo e intimamente relacionado, "ciência" também se refere a um corpo de conhecimento em si, do tipo que pode ser racionalmente explicado e aplicado de forma confiável. Um praticante de ciência é conhecido como cientista. Desde a antiguidade clássica, a ciência como um tipo de conhecimento tem sido intimamente ligada à filosofia. No início do período moderno, as palavras "ciência" e "filosofia da natureza" costumavam ser usadas indistintamente. No século 17, a filosofia natural era considerada um ramo separado da filosofia. No uso moderno, a "ciência" geralmente se refere a uma forma de buscar conhecimento, não só ao próprio conhecimento. Também é freqüentemente restrita aos ramos de estudo que procuram explicar os fenômenos do universo material. Nos séculos XVII e XVIII, os cientistas procuraram cada vez mais formular o conhecimento em termos de leis da natureza, como as leis de movimento de Newton.

To pursue science is not to disparage the things of the spirit. In fact, to pursue science rightly is to furnish the framework on which the spirit may rise.
And by the way, I wanted to point out that Kindred is not science fiction. You'll note there's no science in it. It's a kind of grim fantasy.
