Em finanças, a venda a descoberto é a prática de vender títulos ou outros instrumentos financeiros que atualmente não são de propriedade e, posteriormente, recomprá-los. No caso de uma diminuição do preço provisório, o vendedor curto irá lucrar, uma vez que o custo de compra será inferior ao produto recebido após a venda inicial. Por outro lado, a posição curta será encerrada com a perda no caso de o preço de um instrumento em curto-circuito aumentar antes da recompra. A perda potencial em uma venda curta é teoricamente ilimitada em caso de aumento ilimitado no preço do instrumento, no entanto, o vendedor curto será obrigado a publicar margem ou garantia para cobrir perdas e qualquer incapacidade de fazê-lo em uma em tempo hábil faria com que seu corretor ou contraparte liquidasse o cargo. Nos mercados de valores mobiliários, o vendedor geralmente deve emprestar os valores mobiliários para efetuar a entrega na venda a descoberto. Em alguns casos, o vendedor curto deve pagar uma taxa para emprestar os valores mobiliários e deve, adicionalmente, reembolsar o credor por devoluções em dinheiro que o credor teria recebido se os valores mobiliários não tivessem sido emprestados.
