Sinologia significa literalmente o estudo da China e dos temas chineses. A sinologia também pode se referir mais estritamente ao estudo da linguagem e da literatura clássicas, com uma abordagem filológica, talvez em um contexto acadêmico americano. Sua origem, diz uma pesquisa recente, "pode ser atribuída ao exame que os estudiosos chineses fizeram de sua própria civilização".
