Sulfato de sódio
O sulfato de sódio é o sal de sódio do ácido sulfúrico. Quando anidro, é um sólido cristalino branco de fórmula Na2SO4 conhecido como o thenardite mineral; o decahidrato Na2SO4 · 10H2O é encontrado naturalmente como o mirabilite mineral, e na forma processada tem sido conhecido como sal de Glauber ou, historicamente, sal mirabilis desde o século XVII. Outro sólido é o hepta-hidratado, que se transforma em mirabilite quando resfriado. Com uma produção anual de 6 milhões de toneladas, é um importante produto químico de commodities. O sulfato de sódio é utilizado principalmente para a fabricação de detergentes e no processo Kraft de polpa de papel. Cerca de dois terços da produção mundial é de mirabilite, a forma mineral natural do decaidrato e o restante de subprodutos de processos químicos, como a produção de ácido clorídrico.
