Ilhas Salomão
Ilhas Salomão é um país soberano composto por um grande número de ilhas na Oceania, a leste da Papua Nova Guiné e a noroeste de Vanuatu e cobrindo uma área de 28.400 quilômetros quadrados. A capital do país, Honiara, está localizada na ilha de Guadalcanal. As Ilhas Salomão não devem ser confundidas com o arquipélago das Ilhas Salomão, que é uma coleção de ilhas da Melanésia que inclui Ilhas Salomão e Ilha de Bougainville. As ilhas foram habitadas há milhares de anos. Em 1568, o navegador espanhol Álvaro de Mendaña foi o primeiro europeu a visitá-los, nomeando-os o Islas Salomón. Em 1893, o Reino Unido estabeleceu um protectorado sobre o território. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a campanha das Ilhas Salomão viu uma luta feroz entre os Estados Unidos e o Império do Japão, como na Batalha de Guadalcanal.
