O termo somático significa "do corpo" - relacionado ao corpo distinto da mente, alma ou espírito. Em medicina, a doença somática é corporal, não mental, doença. O termo é freqüentemente usado em biologia para se referir às células do corpo em contraste com as células da linha germinativa, que geralmente dão origem aos gametas.
