Na anatomia, o epitélio escamoso é um epitélio caracterizado por sua camada mais superficial consistindo em células planas, em escala, chamadas células epiteliais escamosas. O epitélio pode ser composto de uma camada destas células, caso em que é referido como simples epitélio escamoso, ou pode possuir múltiplas camadas, referidas então como epitélio escamoso estratificado. Ambos os tipos realizam diferentes funções, desde a troca de nutrientes até a proteção. Os cânceres do epitélio escamoso incluem carcinoma de células escamosas, carcinoma basocelular e outros tumores anexiais. As células epiteliais escamosas têm uma aparência poligonal quando vistas de cima.
