Os sunbirds e os caçadores de aranha constituem uma família, Nectariniidae, de passarinhos muito pequenos. Existem 132 espécies em 15 gêneros. A família é distribuída em toda a África, o Subcontinente Indiano, no Sudeste Asiático e apenas atinge o norte da Austrália. A maioria dos sunbirds se alimentam em grande parte do néctar, mas também tomam insetos e aranhas, especialmente quando se alimentam jovens. Os tubos de flores que abrem acesso ao néctar devido à sua forma, são simplesmente perfurados na base perto dos nectários. A fruta também é parte da dieta de algumas espécies. Seu vôo é rápido e direto em suas asas curtas. Os sunbirds têm homólogos em dois grupos muito distantes: os beija-flores das Américas e os honeyeaters da Austrália. As semelhanças são devidas à evolução convergente provocada por um estilo de vida similar ao nectar-alimentação. Algumas espécies sunbird podem tomar néctar pairando como um beija-flor, mas geralmente perca para se alimentar.
