Na filosofia, a superveniência é uma relação ontológica que é usada para descrever casos em que as propriedades de nível inferior de um sistema determinam suas propriedades de nível superior. Alguns filósofos afirmam que o mundo está estruturado em uma espécie de hierarquia de propriedades, onde as propriedades de nível superior se sobrepõem às propriedades de nível inferior. De acordo com este tipo de visão, as propriedades sociais sobrepor as propriedades psicológicas, as propriedades psicológicas sobre as propriedades biológicas, as propriedades biológicas sobre as propriedades químicas, etc. Isto é, as propriedades químicas do mundo determinam uma distribuição de propriedades biológicas, essas propriedades biológicas determinam uma distribuição de propriedades psicológicas, e assim por diante. Assim, por exemplo, a superveniência mente-corpo sustenta que "todo fenômeno mental deve ser fundamentado ou ancorado em alguma base física subjacente. Isso significa que estados mentais podem ocorrer apenas em sistemas que podem ter propriedades físicas, ou seja, sistemas físicos". É útil conhecer ambos quando a superveniência faz e não obtém.
