Nos sistemas de energia elétrica AC, um sincronismo é um dispositivo que indica o grau em que dois sistemas são sincronizados entre si. Para que dois sistemas elétricos sejam sincronizados, ambos os sistemas devem operar na mesma freqüência e o ângulo de fase entre os sistemas deve ser zero. Os sincroscópios medem e exibem a diferença de freqüência e o ângulo de fase entre dois sistemas de energia. Somente quando essas duas quantidades são zero, é seguro conectar os dois sistemas juntos. A conexão de dois sistemas de corrente alterna não sincronizados em conjunto é susceptível de causar correntes elevadas, o que prejudicará gravemente qualquer equipamento não protegido por fusíveis ou disjuntores.
