Tachylite é uma forma vítrea de vidro vulcânico basáltico. Este "vidro" é formado naturalmente pelo resfriamento rápido do basalto fundido. É um tipo básico de rocha ígnea que é decomposável por ácidos e prontamente fusível. A cor é um preto ou castanho escuro, e tem um brilho resinoso e oleoso. É muito quebradiço e ocorre em diques, veias e massas intrusivas. A palavra se origina do takhus grego que significa swift. Os tachylites têm a aparência do tom e são frequentemente mais ou menos vesiculares e às vezes esferulíticos. Eles são muito frágeis e quebram rapidamente sob um martelo. Pequenos cristais de feldspato ou de olivina às vezes são visíveis neles com o olho sem ajuda. Todos os tachylites ressaltam bastante facilmente e por oxidação do ferro tornam-se castanho escuro ou vermelho. Três modos de ocorrência caracterizam essa rocha. Em todos os casos, eles são encontrados em condições que implicam um resfriamento rápido, mas são muito menos comuns do que os óleos volcanes ácidos, pelo que aparentemente as rochas básicas têm maior tendência a cristalizar, em parte porque são mais líquidas e as moléculas têm mais liberdade para se organizar em ordem cristalina.

Tachylite is a vitreous form of basaltic volcanic glass. This "glass" is formed naturally by the rapid cooling of molten basalt. It is a basic type of igneous rock that is decomposable by acids and readily fusible. The color is a black or dark-brown, and it has a greasy-looking, resinous luster. It is very brittle and occurs in dikes, veins and intrusive masses. The word originates from the Greek takhus meaning swift. Tachylites have the appearance of pitch and are often more or less vesicular and sometimes spherulitic. They are very brittle and break down readily under a hammer. Small crystals of feldspar or olivine are sometimes visible in them with the unaided eye. All tachylites weather rather easily and by oxidation of their iron become dark brown or red. Three modes of occurrence characterize this rock. In all cases they are found under conditions which imply rapid cooling, but they are much less common than acid volcanic glasses, the reason being apparently that the basic rocks have a stronger tendency to crystallize, partly because they are more liquid and the molecules have more freedom to arrange themselves in crystalline order.
