Todos eles foram construídos um pouco como crocodilos, mas com crânios mais curtos, poses mais eretas e geralmente um pouco mais leves. O grupo inclui os ancestrais de dinossauros, pterossauros e crocodilíneos, bem como uma série de formas extintas que não originaram nenhum descendente. O termo "thecodont" ainda é usado como uma descrição anatômica da morfologia dentária observada nessas espécies e outras.
