Termotaxis
Thermotaxis é um comportamento no qual um organismo dirige sua locomoção para cima ou para baixo em um gradiente de temperatura. A pesquisa de laboratório determinou que alguns moldes de limo e pequenos nemátodos podem migrar ao longo de gradientes de temperatura incrivelmente rasas de menos de 0,16C / cm e às vezes tão baixos quanto 0.001C / cm. A análise teórica indica que mesmo este feito impressionante está longe de pressionar os limites estabelecidos pelo ruído térmico. O ambiente natural sempre contém gradientes de temperatura aos quais os organismos poderiam responder, se fosse útil. A resposta do molde de limo e nematóide é complicada e pensada para permitir que eles se movam em direção a um nível adequado no solo. Pesquisas recentes sugerem que o esperma de mamífero emprega termotaxis para se mover para uma localização apropriada no oviduto da fêmea.
