Thymus
O timo é um órgão especializado do sistema imunológico. Dentro do timo, as células T, críticas para o sistema imune adaptativo, são maduras. Cada célula T ataca uma substância estranha que ela identifica com seu receptor. As células T possuem receptores que são gerados por aleatoriamente misturando segmentos de genes. Cada célula T ataca um antígeno diferente. As células T que atacam as próprias proteínas do corpo são eliminadas no timo. As células epiteliais tímicas expressam proteínas importantes de outras partes do corpo. Em primeiro lugar, as células T passam por "Seleção Positiva", pelo que a célula entra em contato com auto-MHC expresso por células epiteliais tímicas; Aqueles sem interação são destruídos. Em segundo lugar, a célula T passa por "Seleção Negativa" interagindo com a célula dendrítica tímica, pelo que as células T com interação de alta afinidade são eliminadas através da apoptose e aqueles com afinidade intermediária sobreviveram. O timo é composto de dois lobos idênticos e está localizado de forma anatômica no mediastino anterior superior, em frente ao coração e atrás do esterno. Histologicamente, cada lobo do timo pode ser dividido em uma medula central e um córtex periférico que é cercado por uma cápsula externa.
